BREAKING: Biden's CDC Director Has Resigned

A Statement from the White House has confirmed that Dr. Rochelle Walensky, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is stepping down from her position. The Associated Press reports that Walensky submitted her resignation on Friday citing the waning of the COVID-19 pandemic as an opportunity for her to transition out of the high-profile role.

According to The AP report, Walensky's last day at the CDC will be June 30th, CDC officials said. An interim director of the massive government agency has yet to be named. Reportedly Walensky sent a letter of resignation to President Joe Biden and subsequently announced her decision at a CDC Staff meeting.

In an email to her staff cited by The Washington Post Walensky wrote,

"The end of the covid-19 public health emergency marks a tremendous transition for our country, for public health, and in my tenure as CDC Director. I took on this role with the goal of leaving behind the dark days of the pandemic and moving CDC — and public health — forward into a much better and more trusted place,” Walensky wrote, touting the administration of hundreds of millions of vaccines. “In the process, we safely opened schools and businesses, saved and improved lives, and protected the country and the world from the greatest infectious-disease threat we have seen in over 100 years."

In the White House statement, Biden claimed, "Dr. Walensky leaves CDC a stronger institution, better positioned to confront health threats and protect Americans.  We have all benefited from her service and dedication to public health."

As reported by the AP though, Walensky's tenure and management of the COVID-19 virus was plagued with controversy. The report noted that in spring 2021 Walensky told Americans that fully vaccinated people could cease mask-wear in most settings only to promptly reverse course with the spread of the so-called 'delta-variant'. Later her decision to suddenly shorten isolation and quarantine periods caused confusion.

Most Americans will remember Walensky for her championing of mask mandates and vaccination mandates, both of which have been largely debunked in the subsequent months.

In 2021, Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas lampooned CDC guidance issued under Walensky's orders saying the agency had "destroyed their credibility" through an "absurd" recommendation that vaccinated people wear masks indoors according to The New York Post.

“That’s not science. That’s politics. It’s pure politics,” he told Fox News' Sean Hannity.

“You know what? Yesterday, vaccines worked. Today, they still work, but as a political matter, the Democrats decided they want to control your lives, they want everyone to wear a mask, and my view is real simple: We shouldn’t have federal government mandates on COVID."

“That means no mask mandates,” Cruz continued, “That means no vaccine mandates. That means no vaccine passports. This should be a question of individual choice.”
