On Tuesday morning, the Twitter account of Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) was suspended for a profile picture of him hunting a Montana antelope with his wife.
The account is “temporarily unavailable because it violates the Twitter Media Policy.” More specifically, the image violates Twitter’s “graphic violence or adult content in profile images” policy.
“You may not post media that is graphic or share violent or adult nudity and sexual behavior within live video or in profile header, List banner images, or Community cover photos,” Twitter wrote justifying the suspension. “Media depicting excessively gory content, sexual violence and/or assault, bestiality or necrophilia is also not permitted.”
In response to the censorship of the prominent Republican, many of his Senate colleagues came to his defense.
“My friend [Steve Daines] was put in Twitter jail this morning for having this image as his profile picture,” wrote Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), asking, “Why?”

“Ridiculous. My friend [Steve Daines] is in [Twitter] jail for posting this pic w/ his wife Cindy,” tweeted Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX). “If you don’t like hunting, fine, don’t go. But don’t censor others who disagree. And I’m pretty sure this is a formal job responsibility for a senator from Montana! #FreeSteveDaines.”
“Twitter has ridiculously suspended Sen. [Steve Daines] because his profile picture is of him and his wife hunting,” wrote Donald Trump Jr. “What a disgrace!”
According to the Daily Caller, in response to the suspension, Sen. Daines said, “My wife is a great shot. What can I say?”
The Republican senator’s tweets will be hidden until the suspension is lifted with that reportedly occurring when Daines removes the photo from his profile.
This censorship of a very American activity showcases how deep censorship still remains on Twitter despite Elon Musk’s reforms. The Montana Republican should have his account reinstated immediately and it should have been removed for posting an image of a Montana past time.
