Nadine Arslanian, the wife of embattled U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat, has now been caught up in the Federal investigation into her husband according to reports.
Arslanian is being examined for potentially receiving gifts and/or services from individuals seeking favor from the once-powerful Senator according to The Wallstreet Journal citing “people familiar with the matter.”
Associates of Arslanian have been subpoenaed by the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, the very same office that has been investigating former President Donald Trump, asking for information about the Senator and his wife. The two were reportedly married in 2020.
While it has not been reported what precisely the DOJ’s interest in Sen. Menendez is in this case, however, it was reported that the case involving Arslanian is not related to the pre-existing 2015 public corruption case which led to a mistrial in 2017.
WSJ reported that a spokesman for Menendez referred back to a previous statement that indicated the Senator was aware of the investigation.
“As always, should any official inquiries be made, the senator is available to provide any assistance that is requested of him or his office.”
Wael Hana, the founder of IS EG Halal is a reported associate of Arslanian according to The Daily Mail. Court documents filed by Hana’s attorney the U.S. attorney was investigating possible undisclosed foreign lobbying in the U.S. and other suspected violations of federal law. The attorney, Lawrence Lustberg, sought the return of Hana’s government-seized property.
“Once he has the opportunity to do so, and the truth comes out, he is confident that the government will recognize that he has done absolutely nothing wrong, including that IS EG was awarded its Halal certification contract with Egypt without any assistance whatsoever from any U.S. public official,” Lustberg said on behalf of his client.
Tweeting in response to the story, former Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clark, Jr. wrote, “And how about Democrat Senator Bob Menendez who was indicted on corruption charges. Ended in a hung jury. Democrat Party did not abandon him. He was re-elected after. No wonder GOP underperformed on Nov 8. Party doesn’t fully back their candidates.”
