Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY) introduced a resolution this week that would change the Constitution by lowering the age to vote in a U.S. election from 18 years of age to 16.
More specifically, the resolution calls for the repeal of the 26th amendment which reads: “The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.”
Meng’s change would exchange “eighteen years of age” with “sixteen years of age” thus bringing in millions of new voters each election.
Young people overwhelmingly lean Democrat and thus Meng’s move would be a boon to progressives wanting to push through their policy priorities with the help of impressionable high schoolers.
“Our young people, including 16- and 17-year-olds, continue to fight and advocate for so many issues that they are passionate about from gun safety to the climate crisis,” the New York City congresswoman said about a similar effort last Congress. “They have been tremendously engaged on policies affecting their lives and their futures.”

“Their activism, determination, and efforts to demand change are inspirational and have truly impacted our nation. It’s time to give them a voice in our democracy by permitting them to be heard at the ballot box,” Meng argued. “Let’s let them be heard and make their voices count. Let’s give them a say in choosing who they want their government representatives to be. I’m proud to stand with our young people in introducing this legislation, and I urge my colleagues in the House to support it.”
Other Democrats also backed the resolution with Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) arguing “It’s our younger generation that will face the long-term consequences of our political challenges – like stymied action on climate change, gun violence, and reproductive rights. We need to defend their right to vote,” as reported by Fox News.
Other Democrats who backed the measure include progressive squad members Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA).
The Democrats’ attempt to lower the voting age is a far-fetched idea given the immense difficulties of amending the Constitution. To do so, a resolution requires two-thirds of Congress to vote in favor followed by three-fourths of the state legislatures agreeing to the constitutional change.
The Democrats once again target impressionable young people in an attempt to help themselves politically. If high schoolers were to be given the vote, then our country would likely take a turn for the worse.
