As the House Republicans are set to vote on Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) nomination to the Speaker of the House for the fourth time Wednesday, former President Donald Trump broke his silence on the matter and endorsed the Californian for the most powerful position in Congress.

“Some really good conversations took place last night, and it’s now time for all of our GREAT Republican House Members to VOTE FOR KEVIN, CLOSE THE DEAL, TAKE THE VICTORY, & WATCH CRAZY NANCY PELOSI FLY BACK HOME TO A VERY BROKEN CALIFORNIA, THE ONLY SPEAKER IN U.S. HISTORY TO HAVE LOST THE “HOUSE” TWICE!” The former president wrote on Truth Social.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who stepped down from Democrat leadership late last year, was at odds with President Trump repeatedly during his administration and has long been a thorn in the side of Republicans wanting to push through an agenda. It is hoped by many, including the former president given his endorsement, that McCarthy would be able to replicate Pelosi’s ability to stop the governing agenda of a sitting president.

“REPUBLICANS, DO NOT TURN A GREAT TRIUMPH INTO A GIANT & EMBARRASSING DEFEAT,” Trump explained, adding, “IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE, YOU DESERVE IT. Kevin McCarthy will do a good job, and maybe even a GREAT JOB – JUST WATCH!”

“TAKE THE VICTORY AND RUN!!!” Trump added Wednesday morning.

Trump was previously non-committal about endorsing a potential speaker candidate, telling NBC’s Garrett Haake in a phone interview that “We’ll see what happens. We’ll see how it all works out.”

The debate over the future of Republican leadership in the House is an unprecedented one given that the last time a speaker has been unsuccessfully elected on the first ballot was in 1923.

20 Republicans have come out against McCarthy’s speakership to gain concessions from the Republican leader. In the process of their fight, the 20 congressmen have found Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) as a potential alternative to McCarthy, however, Jordan has stated that he has no interest in the job.

The 20 Republicans include Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC), Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), Rep. Josh Brecheen (R-OK), Rep. Mike Cloud (R-TX), Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA), Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ), Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Rep. Bob Good (R-VA), Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ), Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD), Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL), Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC), Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN), Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA), Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT), Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), and Rep. Keith Self (R-TX), as reported by The Daily Wire.

The fourth speakership ballot will take place on Wednesday at noon. President Trump’s endorsement may sway some of the Republican holdouts, but they are likely emboldened by yesterday’s events and will continue to stand firm. The former president certainly has immense influence over the Republican Party, however, it may not be enough to sway enough votes to grant McCarthy the Speaker’s gavel. Americans are watching as the future of the Republican leadership hangs in the balance.
