Billionaire Elon Musk has said he much prefers solving technical and product design problems to doing “management stuff.” This past week, however, he stepped into management shoes and fired the top executives at Twitter after taking over the company last Thursday. These were the same executives who were responsible for shamefully censoring President Trump.

In a reported text exchange this past April with the CEO of Twitter, Parag Agrawai, Musk stated “Frankly, I hate doing mgmt stuff. I kinda don’t think I should be the boss of anyone. But I love helping solve technical/product design problems.”

Now Agrawai, Vijaya Gadde, and Ned Segal are gone. The trio were the leaders in censorship, legal policy, and trust and safety. Sean Edgett, Twitter’s general counsel, was also fired.

Musk said they were fired “for cause” which also means they do not receive their almost $90 million in severance pay.

In addition, Musk dissolved the board of directors of the company, naming himself as the sole director as he completed his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter on Monday with a securities filing. Losing their board roles are Bret Taylor, Agrawai, Omid Kordestani, David Rosenblatt, Martha Lane Fox, Patrick Pichette, Egon Durban, Fei-Fei Li and Mimi Alemayehou, as reported by The Hill.

The fired executives are now considering what their legal options against Musk might be, according to the New York Times.

Other Twitter employees wonder what is going to happen now that Musk is in charge, but he has told workers at the San Francisco location that he “has no plans to lay off 75% of employees at the company once he takes over,” as reported by Business Insider. Yet Musk had told prospective investors recently he would do just that.

We hope he does, and we long to see the days when censored accounts can return to Twitter and have their rightful place in the marketplace of ideas.
