A hostage situation in Richland, Mississippi ended violently last week when police opened fire on the hostage taker, killing the 21-year-old woman.
21-year-old Corlunda McGinister from West Helena, Arkansas took a woman hostage at approximately 5:45 p.m. after she got into a confrontation with a Walmart employee.
At the time of the incident, the Richland Police Department (RPD) released the following; “RPD is working an incident at Walmart involving a weapon. The scene is secure and we will provide updates when they become available.”
Police were called by bystanders and attempted to defuse the situation, however, they were eventually forced to open fire on McGinister, killing her, per WLBT.

In a video that circulated social media, McGinister can be seen holding a gun in one hand and a female Walmart employee in the other, per WAPT.
While she kept the woman hostage, she demanded to talk to a news anchor. When confronted by police, she said that she didn’t want to hurt anyone despite having a firearm pointed at the hostage.
“It’s devastating for all parties involved. The officers, everybody that was involved in this situation,” said Richland Police Chief Nick McLendon, per the Washington Post. “With the Christmas season coming around, mental health is a big deal because of the stress involved in the Christmas season.”
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations is investigating the incident to determine what occurred and the motivation behind Ms. McGinister’s actions.
