Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) of the U.S. House Oversight Committee told CNN on Friday that Hunter Biden, the younger son of the sitting President Joe Biden will be subpoenaed regarding his father’s involvement in his overseas business dealings after explicitly telling reporters the day before, “This is an investigation of Joe Biden.”
Comer told CNN’s interviewer that the committee will compel testimony from the 52-year-old ‘first son,’ however, he added “There’s no plans to subpoena Joe Biden.” While he was direct that the investigation is centered around the conduct of the President, not his son, he added that compelling a sitting President to testify is legally “complicated.”
“This committee will evaluate whether this president is compromised or swayed by foreign dollars,” Comer said Thursday.
“This needs to be called the Biden investigation and not the Hunter Biden investigation,” he said to CNN echoing his Thursday comments.
The congressman lamented the overuse of Congressional subpoena power by House Democrats during the hyper-partisan January 6th hearings according to The New York Post saying, “it’s hard to get people to come in” for hearings, noting “the Democrats sent out subpoenas like junk mail.”
Hunter Biden has been the subject of a federal investigation for potential tax fraud, and the DOJ was reportedly investigating the younger Biden’s possible firearms violation after he allegedly lied about his drug abuse in order to purchase a handgun as revealed by The Washington Post.
In the Thursday press conference, Rep. Comer referred to over one hundred “suspicious activity reports,” or “SARs,” according to Newsweek, that banks are required to file to the U.S. Treasury for all transactions “suspected to be related to money laundering or fraud, or other types of criminal activity.”
“According to media reports, the Biden family accumulated over 150 SARs,” Comer continued.
“One SAR generated by an American bank to the Treasury Department connects Hunter Biden and his business associates to human trafficking, among other illegal activities[…]The SAR shows that Hunter Biden was conducting business with suspected human traffickers.”
“As part of our investigation, we have evidence that the finances, credit cards, and bank accounts of Hunter and Joe Biden were co-mingled, if not shared.” Comer added.
A spokesman for the White House Counsel’s office, Ian Sams told CNN in a statement, “Instead of working with President Biden to address issues important to the American people, like lower costs, congressional Republicans’ top priority is to go after President Biden with politically motivated attacks chock full of long-debunked conspiracy theories”
“President Biden is not going to let these political attacks distract him from focusing on Americans’ priorities, and we hope congressional Republicans will join us in tackling them instead of wasting time and resources on political revenge,” he added.
