President Joe Biden has reversed a Trump-era rule within the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and ordered them to reopen legal immigration to individuals with a history of living off of American taxpayers through welfare and other benefits.

The Trump administration’s policy referred to as “public charge,” promulgated in 2020 made it more difficult for non-citizens to gain legal residency if they previously collected welfare or used food stamps, Medicaid, or federally subsidized housing. The logical premise is that the American taxpayer shouldn’t be burdened by immigrants staying in the country legally who do not contribute to the tax base.

According to Breitbart, in the last week of December, the Biden administration began to impose this change in policy specifying that foreigners with a history of dependency on welfare will not be excluded from seeking permanent residency.

“[The Department of Homeland Security] will not consider receipt of noncash benefits (for example, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, public housing, school lunch programs, etc.) other than long-term institutionalization at government expense,” the agency stated regarding the policy shift in a September announcement.

In the announcement U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Ur M. Jaddou referred to the Trump-era policies as “barriers in the immigration system” and “excessive burdens in the application process.”

However, this move demonstrates another instance of the Biden administration reversing a wildly popular Trump-era policy change without the American people’s support for it as Breitbart notes. At the policy’s inception in 2020, approximately 60 percent of Americans polled favored ending welfare-dependent immigration. The result even cut startlingly across racial and ethnic lines with more than half of Hispanics and an overwhelming 71 percent of black Americans agreeing.

Embattled Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, who faces likely impeachment from the incoming Republican House majority, claimed, “This action ensures fair and humane treatment of legal immigrants and their U.S. citizen family members.”

He called the changes that openly defy the will of the American people, “Consistent with America’s bedrock values.” Adding, “we will not penalize individuals for choosing to access the health benefits and other supplemental government services available to them.”

A Center for Immigration Studies report found that approximately 63 percent of noncitizen households use at least one form of taxpayer-funded welfare, compared to only 35 percent of American-citizen households. Simply put: double the amount of non-citizen households are an undue burden on the American taxpayer.

The latest Rasmussen poll cited by Breitbart also confirms the serious departure of Biden’s actions from the will of the American people. A huge majority, 69 percent, want a reduction in legal immigration levels, and 36 percent want the levels cut at least in half.
