During a press conference on Thursday, Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) announced that he would be interested in releasing all of the footage from the January 6th Capitol Riot so that Americas can judge for themselves the events of that day rather than through the lens of a partisan Democrat-led committee.
“I think the public should see what happened on that day,” McCarthy said when asked if he would release the footage. “I watched what Nancy Pelosi did, where she politicized it. Where for the first time in the history as a Speaker, not allowing the minority to appoint to a committee.”
“We watched the politicization of this. I think the American public should actually see what happened instead of a report that’s written on a political basis,” he said, adding, “I want to be very thoughtful about it, but yes, I’m engaged to do that.”
The decision to release the footage was one of the concessions given to the 20 GOP hold-outs who were successful in forcing McCarthy to give in to their demands leading to substantial reforms in the House of Representatives, as reported by Breitbart.
One of those concessions was the release of the Capitol footage that has been used selectively by Democrats to malign both former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party as a whole.

“Thank you to the 20 patriots who helped EARN this commitment from the Speaker,” tweeted Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) in response to McCarthy’s announcement. “Thank you [Speaker McCarthy] for affirming this commitment you made. Keeping promises is how trust is built. I’m growing more optimistic by the day!”
Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) told the Washington Times that the footage can be used by the January 6th defendants currently awaiting trial as evidence in court: “The defendants aren’t given the proper background to defend themselves; it has to happen. Absolutely. It has to happen. Let’s set it free, and while we’re doing that, let’s get the tape with Ms. Pelosi in conversation with the Gen. [Mark A. Milley] and the Capitol Police.”
While McCarthy will push to have the footage released, the final decision is apparently up to the U.S. Capitol Police. “The video has been designated security information and is therefore protected from public disclosure. Releasing it would ultimately be up to the Capitol Police Board and not the Department.”
Kevin McCarthy is continuing to keep his promises after he won the speakership. This concession is yet another instance of the speaker fulfilling his obligation to the Republicans that made him Speaker of the House.
