On Monday, the House of Representatives passed the Rules package that was agreed upon by Speaker of the House Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and the 20 GOP opposition members who held out during the speaker election last week.

The Rules package was passed on almost complete party lines with 220 voting in favor and 213 voting against the reforms.

A sole Republican voted against the package, Rep. Tony Gonzalez (R-TX), who announced his decision via Twitter last week in the heat of the negotiations.

“I am a NO on the house rules package,” the south Texas congressman wrote. “Welcome to the 118th Congress.”

Despite some worry that moderates like Gonzalez would block the package, the GOP was able to secure historic changes including the ability for a single representative to call for a no-confidence vote for the speaker, the end of proxy voting, the ability to amend appropriations bills, and the creation of powerful select committees like the subcommittee on the weaponization of the federal government and a committee on the “strategic competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party.”

Upon the approval of the package, McCarthy released a statement praising the changes brought to the 118th Congress, as reported by Breitbart.

House Republicans Take Unprecedented Action Against DHS Secretary Mayorkas to Secure Border

“Congress has been broken for a long time,” the speaker said in the introduction of his statement. “Over the years, a concentration of power within the Speaker’s Office has kept lawmakers on the sidelines from participating in the legislative process that would impact their communities. Lawmaking should be open to all Members, not just a select few, so that the best ideas win.”

“That’s what this rules package reflects. Rules that empower Members to debate and legislate are replacing rules that silenced their voice and centralized power,” McCarthy continued. “Rules that increase transparency are replacing rules that kept lawmaking hidden behind closed doors. And rules that reopen Congress to We the People are replacing rules like proxy voting that kept this floor empty.”

“By boldly shifting away from the centralized legislating of the past and returning to regular order that empowers Members, committees, and the public,” he explained, adding, “House Republicans are keeping our commitment to make Congress more open, more accountable, and more responsive to the needs of the American people.”

The leader of the GOP opposition, Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), wrote on Twitter that House Republicans now “have the tools… now the work lies ahead. We need to execute and seize this historic opportunity.”

As Republicans forge a new future for the 118th Congress, Americans should be looking forward to what can be accomplished in this new era of bold conservative leadership. With members of the House Freedom Caucus, like Chip Roy, keeping the establishment in check, the party is on the right track to taking back America.
