Manhattan D.A. Alvin Bragg Must ‘Come Forward’ to Congress by Tomorrow or Face Consequences

The unprecedented attempt to indict a former president on criminal charges by Alvin Bragg, Manhattan’s District Attorney, has faced backlash to it. On March 20th, Representatives Jim Jordan (R-OH), Byran Steil (R-WI), and James Comer (R-KY) sent Mr. Bragg a letter summoning him to appear before Congress. One of the signers of that letter, Mr. Steil, who chairs the House Administration Committee, told Breitbart News that “[w]e gave him until Thursday to come forward.”

The Wisconsin Republican explained in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News under what authority Congress has to summon Mr. Bragg. “The Committee on House Administration has jurisdiction over federal election law,” he said simply. He further explained that “we’re working with Chairman Comer and working with Chairman Jordan. I think the question that needs to be answered is: Is this [the attempt to indict Trump] a political move?”

Representative Steil detailed the case that it was by expounding that “[w]hen you look at the fact that previous prosecutors have reviewed this and ultimately made a decision not to prosecute, and he made a previous decision he wasn’t going to move forward and now he is moving forward, what changed? The only thing that changed is President Trump has announced he is running for reelection.”

He added that “I think that broadly for the American people we are concerned about the politicization of our judicial system” and mentioned that there were “clear questions…about whether there is a misuse of federal funds [to Bragg’s office] that are intended to actually do things like reduce crime that are actually being repurposed for political purposes.” Mr. Steil thought this abuse of funds was an adequate justification for Congress to act.

He also described how the other committees factor into this equation. Mr. Steil said that “I actually think we have a unique opportunity to work together. Obviously, Jim Comer has oversight over pretty much everything. Jim Jordan has it as it relates to criminal law. We have it as it relates to election law. We’re going to leverage and utilize the strength of our committees to get the answers for the American people that I think the American people deserve.”

The letter to Mr. Bragg also mentioned a deadline of this Thursday by 10 am to respond to its summons. The letter requested Mr. Bragg produce documentation and information from January 1, 2017, to the present concerning the investigation against Mr. Trump, all documentation and communication by specified individuals that referred to or were related to Donald Trump, and the same material for his office’s receipts and usage of its federal funds.

Jim Jordan (R-OH) put the matter in a slightly different light when he tweeted asking if ” anyone in Biden Administration been in contact with the Manhattan DA’s office about a possible Trump indictment? Any Democrat members of congress? Everyone knows this is all politics. But how far does it go?”

There are reports now that Mr. Bragg may be at risk of prosecutorial misconduct due to him allegedly hiding hundreds of pages of exculpatory evidence in his attempt to pin Trump on criminal charges. All of this remains concerning.
