After two suspects attempted a smash-and-grab in a Los Angeles shopping mall on Tuesday afternoon, a group of U.S. Marines from a nearby recruiting station took the thieves down as they attempted to flee.

The robbery took place in the Del Amo Fashion Center where four masked men with hammers entered a jewelry store and smashed the display cases to grab the precious jewels inside.

As the group of thieves was beginning to flee the area, they were confronted by a group of Marine recruiters and bystanders. The Marines were able to detain two of the subjects until police arrived on the scene, according to Fox 11. The other two subjects were able to escape.

“Last night, officers responded to several masked suspects armed with hammers & gloves stealing from a jewelry store within the mall,” said the Torrance Police Department in a Facebook post. “As they attempted to flee, nearby military personnel & bystanders held 2 suspects until officers arrived. The suspects were transported to jail for booking. Great work to all involved including Marine Corps Recruiting South Bay!”

Thanks to the Marines’ quick thinking they were able to catch the thieves, hopefully discouraging future criminals from robbing the jewelry store.

“[It was] the Marines. The Marine Corps… They stepped up, they tackled them down,” said Ralph, who captured the Marine takedown on video. “Two got away, two got tackled down, and they stepped it up. That’s enough. Time to fight back.”

Robberies are commonplace in the city of Los Angeles as crime has become an ever-increasing problem in the metroplex.

“We believe there’s a component here of helping to prevent these, by being mindful of your surroundings, recognizing that currently there’s a troubling trend of suspects targeting individuals with expensive jewelry, expensive items of clothing and purses, and the risk to those individuals’ safety is real,” said Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore to residents scared of being victims of crime, as reported by ABC7.

It is tragic that the police departments in California are not getting the support they need to counteract the various violent criminal gangs that conduct large-scale smash and grab operations. If Californians want to see a safer and more stable city, they should reconsider who they elect into office. For now, however, at least brave bystanders like the Marine recruiters are willing to step in.
