Twitter CEO Elon Musk and Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) had an interaction for the ages on Twitter this Saturday in a since-deleted tweet thread.

“Elon Musk calls himself a free speech absolutist, to justify turning a blind eye to hatred and bigotry on Twitter. But when journalists report unfavorable news, they are banned without warning. The devotion to free speech is apparently not that absolute. But the hypocrisy is,” Schiff tweeted.

Musk replied with his characteristic wit and personality: “Thankfully, you lose your chairmanship very soon. Your brain is too small.”

Musk quickly reinstated the accounts of these journalists. They themselves weren’t banned for reporting “unfavorable news.” Musk’s stated reason for suspending them was “doxxing,” which is undoubtedly a very serious matter, as it infringes upon the privacy of all users.

Whether Musk should have suspended these journalists notwithstanding, Musk is suspending doxxers through a reasonably definable and enforceable category distinction. He treats these journalists no differently than he would treat all other Twitter users. That’s much different from the vague criteria used to kick former President Donald Trump off the platform. That action is and will always remain indefensible, as Musk himself alluded to.

It looks as though Musk is also correct about Schiff not keeping his chairmanship. As the DC Enquirer reports, McCarthy has vowed to strip Schiff of his committee assignments.

“You look at Adam Schiff—he should not be serving on Intel when he has openly, knowingly now used a fake dossier, lied to the American public in the process, and doesn’t have any ill will [and] says he wants to continue to do it,” McCarthy said. “You have Adam Schiff, who had lied to the American public time and again – we will not allow him to be on the Intel Committee either.”

McCarthy references Schiff’s sketchy track record on foreign affairs — including promoting the Russia Collusion hoax.

All in all, Musk won in this interaction. He is on the side of truth, which is an enviable position to be in during any discussion. But hopefully, this will make Schiff think twice before he picks a fight with Twitter’s owner.
