A new poll released this week shows former President Donald Trump dominating the potential competition against expected opponents in the 2024 Republican presidential nomination contest.

The poll, conducted with 2,228 Americans from January 19-23, found that Trump is leading his opponents by a mammoth 35 percentage points with 59 percent of those polls supporting the 45th president for election to a second, non-consecutive term.

Behind the former president is Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who has been seen as a potential contender to Trump given his good governance in Florida, at only 24 percent, as reported by Breitbart.

Other contenders considered in the polling include former Vice President Mike Pence receiving eight percent support, former Congresswoman Liz Cheney receiving two percent support, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley receiving two percent support, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) winning two percent of respondents, and Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) only receiving one percent of polled voters.

In addition to the question of who should fill the Republican ticket, the poll also asked if President Joe Biden should run for reelection with results being exactly 50-50.

However, if Biden didn’t run for office, respondents wanted to see Vice President Kamala Harris lead the ticket in 2024 with her garnering 33 percent support. Other contenders for the Democrat nomination included Gov. Gavin Newsom with 19 percent support, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg with nine percent, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocascio-Cortez with seven percent, Elizabeth Warren with six percent, and Stacy Abrams, Amy Klobuchar, and J.B. Pritzker all receiving under five percent support from respondents.

The pollsters also asked respondents to see who they would vote for in a Trump versus Biden presidential contest with the results split right down the middle with 50 percent supporting Trump and 50 percent supporting Biden. The same results were found when the contest was between Gov. DeSantis and President Biden.

Overall, this most recent poll shows that any potential Republican contenders thinking about running in 2024 will face an uphill battle. President Trump holds a dominating lead over his potential competition and challenging him could be political suicide for some, but more prominent candidates could come out unscathed.
