Democrat Senator Mark Kelly Refused To Say If He’ll Support Fellow Arizona Senator in Upcoming Re-Election Bid

When Senator Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona left the Democratic Party and registered as an independent back in December 2022 she declined to discuss her plans for 2024. It is widely speculated that Senator Sinema (I-AZ) will run for re-election in 2024. In an interview with CNN, her fellow Arizona senator, Mark Kelly (D), declined to say whether he will endorse her run should she make it, according to Just The News.

Mr. Kelly remarked that “I’m not going to get ahead of Sen. Sinema. She hasn’t made an announcement. What she has said is, she doesn’t want to be focused on politics right now.” He added that “I have worked with her very closely over the last two years, I mean, really in a very positive way. She’s very effective in the United States Senate. We have got a lot done. And I look forward to doing that over the next months and the rest of this year.”

In an interview with KTAR News that was posted on March 10th, Senator Kelly commented that party affiliation “doesn’t matter” in terms of who he decides to endorse. Senator Sinema has already one challenger from the left for her office should she choose to run. House Representative Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) has announced that he plans to campaign in 2024 for her seat.

BREAKING: GOVERNOR DESANTIS RESPONDS TO NEWS OF POTENTIAL INDICTMENT OF DONALD TRUMP

Senator Sinema is no stranger to leaving political parties. She was once a member of the Green Party and a self-styled “Prada socialist” until her 2004 bid for a seat in the Arizona House of Representatives when she switched her party affiliation to Democratic. As noted by the HuffPost, the future senator described herself as “the most liberal member of the Arizona State Legislature” and as a “former socialist” in 2006.

Ironically, the HuffPost also records her potential Democratic challenger in 2024 praising her back in 2018 saying “[t]hey’ve [Republicans] called everybody a liberal, and it doesn’t work. Voters trust Sinema more than these Republicans who are calling wolf all the time. She’s the one who’s passing legislation and is working across the aisle.”

Now some of the very same Republicans who once scorned her now embrace her as a potential Republican for her prospective 2024 run. Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) when he was asked whether she could caucus with the Republicans said that “[w]e’ll see. We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.” He also noted that “a lot of Republicans [are] talking about it. Obviously, we’d love to have her become a Republican or at least caucus [with] Republicans. That would make things a little more clear.”

This view about the Republicans not fielding a candidate against Sinema in 2024 is by no means uncontroversial or uncontested. Blake Masters (R) has weighed taking another shot at an Arizona Senate seat in 2024 as has Kari Lake, the former Republican 2022 gubernatorial candidate.
