Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) sponsored a major new bill Tuesday that would ban social media giant TikTok in the US — The Averting the National Threat of Internet Surveillance, Oppressive Censorship and Influence, and Algorithmic Learning by the Chinese Communist Party Act (ANTI-SOCIAL CCP Act).

“U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) introduced bipartisan legislation to ban TikTok from operating in the United States.” A press release put out by Senator Rubio states.

“The Averting the National Threat of Internet Surveillance, Oppressive Censorship and Influence, and Algorithmic Learning by the Chinese Communist Party Act (ANTI-SOCIAL CCP Act) would protect Americans by blocking and prohibiting all transactions from any social media company in, or under the influence of, China, Russia, and several other foreign countries of concern.”

The Bill is cosponsored by Reps Mike Gallagher (R-WI) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) — meaning the bill has bipartisan support.

Rubio said of the bill, “The federal government has yet to take a single meaningful action to protect American users from the threat of TikTok. This isn’t about creative videos — this is about an app that is collecting data on tens of millions of American children and adults every day. We know it’s used to manipulate feeds and influence elections. We know it answers to the People’s Republic of China. There is no more time to waste on meaningless negotiations with a CCP-puppet company. It is time to ban Beijing-controlled TikTok for good.”

Rubio is hinting at the fact that TikTok has a controversial relationship with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). As the DC Enquirer reports:

“TikTok’s China connection is a well-documented fact. They are owned by the Chinese parent company ByteDance — which the Chinese Government has a minority stake in. TikTok’s shady business dealings led Trump to ban the download of the app by Executive Order in 2020.Of course, Biden stopped the ban later in 2021 despite the fact his presidential campaign instructed its staff to delete the app from their devices back in 2020, due to security concerns, as reported by CNN. “

While the details surrounding the bill’s level of support are unclear, this is certainly welcome action on the part of the recently reelected Marco Rubio.
