Top Gun: Maverick, the 2022 sequel to 1986’s Top Gun has concluded its theatrical run with yet another success after being nominated for best picture by the Oscars on Tuesday.

The movie that swept America currently has a box office haul of $718,732,821 domestic, $770,000,000 internationally, and an overall box office of nearly $1.5 billion making it the 12th most popular movie ever, according to Box Office Mojo.

The Oscar nomination will be the fourth nomination for Tom Cruise, who both starred in and produced the film. The nomination is his first in two decades. Cruise’s other nominations include Best Supporting Actor in 2000’s Magnolia, Best Actor for 1997’s Jerry Maguire, and Best Actor for 1990s Born on the Fourth of July, as reported by Breitbart.

Like its successor, the original Top Gun received four Oscar nominations.

The Oscars, which has had abysmal ratings in recent years, might be attempting to win some favor with the American audience given the film’s popularity. 

The Rotten Tomatoes rating for the film has a favorability rating of 99 percent for the audience score and a critical score of 96 percent.

As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, Cruise thanked audiences around the world by jumping out of a helicopter over South Africa.

“I didn’t want the year to end without thanking you all for coming out to the theater, and thank you for supporting Top Gun: Maverick!” the movie star said. “As always, thank you for allowing us to entertain you. It truly is the honor of a lifetime…Very lucky.”

Americans can see if Tom Cruise’s latest patriotic blockbuster becomes a legend by winning Best Picture of 2022 on March 12 on ABC.
