Former President Donald Trump called for the cancelation of AT&T and DirecTV after the latter canceled popular conservative TV outlet ‘Newsmax’ from its channel lineup earlier this week.
“WOW. AT&T DIRECTV REMOVES NEWSMAX FROM ITS CHANNEL LINEUP,” Trump posted Wednesday. “This disgusting move comes after ‘deplatforming’ OAN last year.”
Trump is referencing the de-platforming of One America News (OAN) by DirecTV last April. AT&T owns a 70 percent stake in DirecTV, which explains the close relationship between the two companies. NPR reports that DirecTV de-platformed OAN after a “performance review,” which deemed OAN did not appeal to a wide enough audience. This prompted Trump to post a statement, attacking AT&T as well as Comcast in January of last year, following the initial announcement of OAN’s cancelation.
“AT&T is closing the very popular One America News Network (OAN) because too many people are watching. They couldn’t put up with that any longer. Conservatives/Republicans should boycott Direct TV, and while you’re at it, ‘Concast’s’ Xfinity as well,” Trump said. “These are Radical Left Lunatics who are destroying our Nation!”

Whether the cost-cutting explanation for dropping OAN is true or not, it is not clear whether this explanation works for Newsmax. Newsmax claims they are “the 4th highest-rated cable news channel in the nation, a top 16 channel for daytime among all cable channels and watched by 25 million Americans, according to Nielsen ratings.” As such, Newsmax disputes the “cost-cutting” explanation vigorously, with Company CEO Christopher Ruddy claiming the real explanation is a “blatant act of political discrimination and censorship against Newsmax.”
Trump continued, opining, “the Radical Left seems to have taken over the mind and soul of AT&T. This is a big blow to the Republican Party, and to America itself. For DIRECTV to drop very popular NEWSMAX, without explanation, will not be accepted. I, for one, will be dropping all association with AT&T and DIRECTV, and I have plenty.”
Trump ended his post by rallying his base around his 2024 presidential run, saying, “this is just one of many reasons why we must WIN IN 2024!!!”
