WATCH: President Trump Says DeSantis Would Be Working in a ‘Pizza Parlor’ Without His Endorsement

On Monday evening, 45th President Donald Trump was interviewed by Fox News‘s Sean Hannity in a lengthy interview that covered the war in Ukraine, Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL), and much more.

A notable segment of the interview included a discussion around Trump’s endorsement of Ron DeSantis in the 2018 Republican gubernatorial primary in Florida.

When Hannity asked about what happened to Trump’s relationship with DeSantis, the Republican frontrunner explained that DeSantis and him weren’t “friends” but that DeSantis was one of many who defended him while in Congress.

Trump went on to explain the story behind his endorsement of the then-congressman during the Republican gubernatorial primary in which the Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam was leading.

DeSantis was “no Jim Jordan…I had a lot of people that really defended me great. But he was good and he defended me. So all of a sudden he is running for governor,” Trump said. “He announced he was running for governor and he wanted my support.”

Trump explained that he didn’t know Adam Putnam, but he did know that DeSantis regularly defended him.

“So what happened with Ron is the following. He came to see me, he was getting killed, he was getting crushed. Adam Putnam, it was over. I had many people who I know who worked for Adam Putnam,” Trump explained. “It was like…a nuclear weapon went off when you endorsed because they considered the race to be over. They had the race. He had millions and millions of dollars and he was way up in the polls. He was beating Ron by 30 points or something. It was over.”

“Ron came to see me, tears in his eyes, and said ‘I need you to do me a big favor,'” Trump said, adding that the then-congressman then asked for his endorsement. Trump then went on to explain that he didn’t think that his endorsement could save DeSantis’ campaign.

“I gave him a great endorsement. From the moment I pressed that button, he blew the guy away. The race was over,” Trump stated, adding that if DeSantis hadn’t gotten his endorsement, “he could have never gotten the nomination. He would be working in either a pizza parlor place or a law office right now.”

Trump then went on to explain how he rallied behind DeSantis in order to get him over the finish line against Andrew Gillum (D-FL).

DeSantis won the Florida Republican gubernatorial primary with 56.5 percent of the vote compared to Adam Putnam’s 36.5 percent, per Ballotpedia. The Florida Republican would then go on to win the governor’s mansion with the slimmest of margins with 49.6 percent of the vote compared to Democrat Andrew Gillum’s 49.2 percent.
