Republican Illinois State Representative Blaine Wilhour provided a simple answer to the latest assault on the Second Amendment by the Democrats under Governor J.B. Pritzker (D-IL), telling him plainly, “We will not comply.”

On Tuesday, the Illinois governor signed HB 5471 into law banning the sale of all semi-automatic firearms, some specifically by name and model, requiring existing owners to register with the state police. In addition to banning semi-automatics, the bill also put harsh restrictions on magazine capacities.

A statement from Pritzker explained,

“Governor Pritzker signed the Protect Illinois Communities Act banning the sale and distribution of assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and switches in Illinois, effective immediately.”

It continued, “House Bill 5471 also caps sales of high-capacity ammunition magazines, bans ‘switches’ that convert legal handguns into assault weapons, and extends the ability of courts to prevent dangerous individuals from possessing a gun through firearm restraining orders.”

“The new law also requires existing owners of semi-automatic rifles to register their ownership, ensuring that law enforcement knows the location of these weapons of war and who to hold accountable if they fall into the wrong hands.”

According to CBSNews, Wilhour responded to the new law by saying, “We will not comply, and you’re not going to do a darn thing about it, because the law, the Constitution, and the founding principles are on our side.”

Former Illinois state senator and defeated GOP gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey was even more direct tweeting, “I’ll die on my front porch before anyone takes my guns away. My message to Springfield: If you want my guns, come get them.”

Dan Eldridge, president of the Federal Firearms Licensees of Illinois told CBS the lobbying group will “react accordingly,” noting that his store and those he represents saw a surge in gun sales the week before the bill was signed.

“Rifles are running at 10 times the rate as last year. So obviously law-abiding gun owners are concerned,” he said.

Eldridge told reporters that he anticipates the courts will side with lawful gun owners and reject the ban.

“We anticipate that we will simply retain possession of those magazines, in anticipation of the dealer lobby group getting injunctive relief against this bill in federal court, which should happen fairly quickly, and then we’ll contact customers and let them collect the rest of their property,” he said.
