As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, a reporter asked the 81-year-old McConnell about running for reelection in 2026, however, the Republican froze up before those beside him came to his aid. After about thirty seconds, the Senate leader appeared to recover.
In response to this incident, the Capitol physician issued the following statement: "I have consulted with Leader McConnell and conferred with his neurology team. After evaluating yesterday’s incident, I have informed Leader McConnell that he is medically clear to continue with his schedule as planned. Occasional lightheadedness is not uncommon in concussion recovery and can also be expected as a result of dehydration."
This isn't the first time that McConnell had a similar incident. As previoulsy reported by the DC Enquirer, McConnell froze up on Capitol Hill when speaking with reporters in July leading to many calling upon him to resign from office.
According to reporter Frank Thorp, McConnell was led away from the podium by Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) before returning back to the podium a few minutes later.
When asked about his condition following the incident, McConnell responded that he was "fine."
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, the Republican fell in early March while out at a dinner at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel leading to the 81-year-old being hospitalized and suffering a concussion.
“Leader McConnell tripped at a dinner event Wednesday evening and has been admitted to the hospital and is being treated for a concussion. He is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days,” said McConnell’s Communication Director David Popp. “The Leader is grateful to the medical professionals for their care and to his colleagues for their warm wishes.”
On the night of the fall, a McConnell spokesperson stated that the minority leader “tripped at a local hotel during a private dinner. He has been admitted to the hospital where he is receiving treatment.”
