WATCH: House Republicans Introduce Bill Requiring Proof Of Citizenship To Register To Vote - 'A Lot Of Illegals Are Voting'

On Wednesday, House Republicans introduced legislation to ensure American citizens are the only ones deciding American elections. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) was joined by several lawmakers and Trump allies, including Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), and former Trump advisor Stephen Miller to announce the SAVE Act, a bill that would require proof of US citizenship to register to vote.

"Because America's borders are wide open and Democrats want to turn noncitizens into voters, Congress must act to protect our federal elections," Johnson wrote on X. "Today, we introduced the SAVE Act to ensure that only Americans get to decide American elections."

Johnson hinted at his support for the legislation during a press conference with Trump at Mar-a-Lago last month when he explained that individuals just have to assert, rather than prove, that they are citizens of the United States to be registered to vote in federal elections.

During the press conference, the House speaker explained that election integrity is a top issue for many Americans, and it is often something that comes up during his travels to various cities across America. "Due to the wide-open border that the Biden administration has refused to close, in fact, that they have engineered to open, we now have so many noncitizens in the country that if only one out of a hundred of those voted, they would cast hundreds of thousands of votes," Johnson said, adding that even a small number of illegal migrants voting in razor-thin elections could change the outcome.

While it is currently illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections, Johnson asserted that there is no current election infrastructure in place to ensure that noncitizens aren't lying on the voter registration paperwork. He also added that the millions of illegal migrants who have been paroled by the Biden administration could go to their nearby welfare office and register to vote. He also explained that states are currently prohibited from asking somebody to prove they are a citizen when they use a registration form. Speaker Johnson also cited various recent examples of localities in California, New York, and other areas that have allowed noncitizens to vote in local elections and added that Democrats are actively pushing for noncitizen voting.

"We all know, intuitively, that a lot of illegals are voting in federal elections," Johnson said during the press conference on Capitol Hill. "But it's not been something that is easily provable. We don't have that number. This legislation will allow us to do exactly that."
