On Friday, House Democrats introduced a bill to rename a federal prison in Miami after presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump. The move comes after a handful of House Republicans introduced a bill to rename the Dulles International Airport just outside of Washington, D.C., after the 45th president.
Several Democrats expressed their outrage at potentially honoring the most successful president of the 21st century by renaming the Dulles Airport, so much so that they filed legislation to express their true desire: to imprison their main political rival. The Democrats' legislation, authored by Reps. Gerry Connolly (D-VA), Jared Moskowitz (D-FL), and John Garamendi (D-CA), would rename the Miami Federal Correctional Institution in southern Florida to the "Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Institution."
"When our Republican colleagues introduced their bill to rename Dulles after Donald Trump, I said the more fitting option would be to rename a federal prison," Rep. Connolly said. "I hope our Republican friends will join us in bestowing upon Donald J. Trump the only honor he truly deserves." Trump is currently facing 91 charges across four different criminal indictments as various left-wing prosecutors utilize lawfare to go after the leader of the opposition party. The Virginia Democrat made his desire to rename a prison after Trump clear on Tuesday when he wrote, "Donald Trump is facing 91 felony charges. If Republicans want to name something after him, I'd suggest they find a federal prison."
The bill to rename Dulles, introduced by Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA) earlier this week, would rename the DC-area airport to Donald J. Trump International Airport. "In my lifetime, our nation has never been greater than under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump," Reschenthaler said about his bill. "As millions of domestic and international travelers fly through the airport, there is no better symbol of freedom, prosperity, and strength than hearing 'Welcome to Trump International Airport' as they land on American soil."
The legislation is cosponsored by Reps. Michael Waltz (R-FL), Andy Ogles (R-TN), Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN), Paul Gosar (R-AZ), Barry Moore (R-AL), and Troy Nehls (R-TX). According to the bill, if signed into law, "the Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia shall after the date of the enactment of this Act be known and designated as the 'Donald J. Trump International Airport.'"
The Dulles International Airport is currently named after former Secretary of State John Foster Dulles who was a dedicated anti-Communist in the Eisenhower administration. If the international airport is renamed after Trump, it would be the second DC-area airport named after a Republican president with the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Virginia being the first.
While both Connolly's bill and Reschenthaler's bill will likely not be taken up on the House floor, the back-and-forth shows Democrats' true motivation for going after President Trump. They could care less about defending justice or the rule of law, as seen with the 2020 Black Lives Matter riots. They only care about taking down Trump and ensuring that President Biden maintains his grip on power despite being the oldest president in American history. Neither of these bills will come to fruition, but Reschenthaler's bill is reasonable given that other presidents have had airports named after them, while Connolly's bill is a slap in the face to the millions of Americans who support Donald Trump.
