Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Calls On New York City Mayor Eric Adams To Resign 'For The Good Of The City'

On Wednesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (R-NY) called upon New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) to resign "for the good of the city" amid an ongoing federal investigation that has led to multiple resignations including the police commissioner, the city's top lawyer, and the schools chancellor all having resigned or announced their intention to resign. The FBI is currently investigating whether Mayor Adams received illegal foreign donations to his mayoral campaign from the Turkish government in 2021.

"I do not see how Mayor Adams can continue governing New York City. The flood of resignations and vacancies is threatening government function. Nonstop investigations will make it impossible to recruit and retain a qualified administration," the New York progressive said about the mayor of the Big Apple. "For the good of the city, he should resign."

When pressed by the media on the recent resignations of city officials, the mayor explained on Tuesday, "We are constantly bringing in new people. So let's not give the image that all of a sudden, there are people saying, 'Hey, I don't want to be in city government.'"

As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, federal authorities conducted multiple home raids earlier this month against some of Mayor Adams' top deputies, including First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright and Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Philip Banks III. In addition to the home raids, the FBI seized the cell phones of the police commissioner, the first deputy mayor, the school's chancellor, the deputy mayor for public safety, and a senior adviser to Mayor Adams, according to The New York Times.

While the motivation behind the raids on the top NYC officials is unclear, sources familiar with the investigation told The New York Post that the bureau is attempting to get someone close to Adams to flip on the mayor of America's biggest city. The investigation has now prompted raids on five of Adams' allies, but the mayor has denied all wrongdoing.

City hall lawyer Lisa Zornberg explained that Mayor Adams has been cooperating with the investigation. "Investigators have not indicated to us that the mayor or his staff are targets of any investigation. As a former member of law enforcement, the mayor has repeatedly made clear that all members of the team need to follow the law," Zornberg explained.

While AOC hasn't been a big fan of Mayor Adams throughout his tenure, her decision to call on him to resign is a turning point in Adams' political career. With one of the most popular New York progressive Democrats coming out against the mayor, the chances of other high-profile Democrats demanding he step aside became more likely.
