'An Assault On American Democracy': Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Demands Supreme Court Justices Be Impeached Following Trump Immunity Ruling

Following the Supreme Court's ruling in Trump v. United States, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) announced that she would be pursuing articles of impeachment against the conservative justices who backed the 6-3 decision that grants all presidents absolute immunity for "official acts" that fall under Article II of the Constitution. The announcement is the latest attempt by progressives to attack the legitimacy of the Supreme Court after previous attempts to slander Justice Clarence Thomas and Justice Samuel Alito while demanding that President Biden pack the court with liberal justices.

As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, the court ruled in a 6-3 decision along ideological lines that 45th President Donald Trump is partially immune from special counsel Jack Smith's prosecution. Trump was granted immunity for "official acts" while not being granted immunity for "unofficial acts." The court's decision is the first time that the Supreme Court has ever considered whether a president can be held criminally liable for actions taken while in office.

"The President enjoys no immunity for his unofficial acts, and not everything the President does is official," Chief Justice John Roberts wrote. "The President is not above the law. But Congress may not criminalize the President's conduct in carrying out the responsibilities of the Executive Branch under the Constitution. And the system of separated powers designed by the Framers has always demanded an energetic, independent Executive. The President therefore may not be prosecuted for exercising his core constitutional powers, and he is entitled, at a minimum, to a presumptive immunity from prosecution for all his official acts. That immunity applies equally to all occupants of the Oval Office, regardless of politics, policy, or party."

In response to the decision, elected Democrats slammed the conservative justices for the decision, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez demanded revealed that she would be pursuing impeachment for the decision, likely using the left-wing media's smear campaign against Altio and Thomas as justification as well as the Monday decision. "The Supreme Court has become consumed by a corruption crisis beyond its control. Today's ruling represents an assault on American democracy," the progressive lawmaker wrote. "It is up to Congress to defend our nation from this authoritarian capture. I intend on filing articles of impeachment upon our return."

Other lawmakers took a less radical position but nonetheless argued that the Supreme Court was going "rogue" by granting immunity to past, present, and future presidents for official acts. "Today, the Supreme Court has gone rogue with its decision, violating the foundational American principle that no one is above the law," former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said in a statement. "The former President's claim of total presidential immunity is an insult to the vision of our founders, who declared independence from a King.  A seriously dangerous aspect of the ruling is its holding that official acts are inadmissible in trials for unofficial acts.  With its delay, the Republican-appointed 6-3 Court gave the defendant a political gift. The Supreme Court placed itself on trial with this decision – and its credibility has been further diminished in the eyes of all those who believe in the rule of law."

The Democrat attempts to undermine the Supreme Court have been well documented after the court shifted to a more originalist interpretation of the Constitution under Trump's first term. Since that point, Democrats have tried everything in their power to undermine and politicize the court because of its unwillingness to give progressives everything they want. AOC's call for impeachment is just the next phase of that effort to further undermine the public's trust in the highest court in the land.
