'All The Credit Goes To Him': George Clooney Praises President Biden's Decision To Exit The Race As The Most 'Selfless Thing' Since George Washington

On Sunday, actor and Democrat fundraiser George Clooney explained to reporters that President Joe Biden's decision to exit the presidential race, a move encouraged by Clooney despite his decision to host fundraisers for the 81-year-old Democrat, was the "most selfless" act by any president since George Washington. The supposedly selfless act came after weeks of intense pressure from Democrats, including Clooney, who demanded that Biden step aside to allow Vice President Kamala Harris to take over the top of the ticket.

"The person who should be applauded is the president who did the most selfless thing that anyone's done since George Washington," Clooney explained to reporters at the Venice Film Festival on Sunday. "What should be remembered is the selfless act of someone who — you know, it's very hard to let go of power. We know that. We've seen it all around the world. And for someone to say, 'I think there's a better way forward.' All the credit goes to him … And all the rest of it will be long gone and forgotten."

"I'm just very proud of where we are in the state of the world, which many people are surprised by, and I think we're all very excited for the future," he added.

While Clooney praises President Biden, he fails to recognize that Biden was forced out of the presidential race by his fellow Democrats and Clooney himself. It wasn't a selfless act by a man who was willing to give up political power but a forced decision after a month-long pressure campaign. During the height of the pressure campaign against Biden, Clooney published an op-ed in the New York Times entitled, "I Love Joe Biden. But We Need a New Nominee." According to The Washington Post, Clooney's opinion piece was a major blow to Biden's efforts to stay in the race, given his insight into Biden's performance at a Los Angeles fundraiser that he hosted. During the Clooney fundraiser, President Biden was seen freezing up while on stage and was forced to be escorted away by President Obama, as previously reported by the DC Enquirer.

"I love Joe Biden. As a senator. As a vice president and as president. I consider him a friend, and I believe in him. Believe in his character. Believe in his morals. In the last four years, he's won many of the battles he's faced," Clooney explained in his op-ed. "But the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time. None of us can. It's devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the Joe' big F-ing deal' Biden of 2010. He wasn't even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate."

"This is about age. Nothing more. But also nothing that can be reversed. We are not going to win in November with this president," he wrote. "On top of that, we won't win the House, and we're going to lose the Senate. This isn't only my opinion; this is the opinion of every senator con, gress member, and governor that I've spoken with in private. Every single one, irrespective of what he or she is saying publicly."
