Suspected Trump Assassin Left Letter To The 'World' Months Before Attempt On Trump's Life - 'I Failed You'

On Monday, the Department of Justice released a letter addressed to the world from the second would-be Trump assassin, 58-year-old Ryan Routh. The letter was sent to an individual by Routh in a box months before the attempt for safekeeping. Included in the box, which the individual opened after hearing about the attack, were multiple letters, ammunition, and other items.

"This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, but I failed you," the gunman wrote. "I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job."

"Everyone across the globe from the youngest to the oldest know that Trump is unfit to be anything, much less a U.S. president," the letter continues. "U.S. presidents must at bare minimum embody the moral fabric that is America, and be kind, caring and selfless and always stand for humanity. Trump fails to understand any of [that]."

In addition to the letter, Routh also included a copy of an ebook he wrote titled "Ukraine's Unwinnable War: The Fatal Flaw of Democracy, World Abandonment and the Global Citizen-Taiwan, Afghanistan, North Korea, WWIII and the End of Humanity." Routh has a long history of supporting Ukraine, even traveling to the country in 2022 to try to fight in the war. After being rejected by the Ukrainian armed forces given his age, Routh, who was interviewed by The New York Times and Semafor in 2023, worked on getting more foreign fighters involved in the war effort. "My initial goal was to come fight … but I'm 56, so initially they were like, I have no military experience, so they were like, you're not an ideal candidate," he explained to Newsweek Romania in 2022. "So they said, not right this minute. So plan B was to come here to Kyiv and promote getting more people here."

According to Fox News, the DOJ explained in a court filing that Routh had called for Iran to assassinate the former president. "In the book, ROUTH stated that he 'must take part of the blame for the [person] that we elected for our next president that ended up being brainless, but I am man enough to say that I misjudged and made a terrible mistake and Iran, I apologize. You are free to assassinate Trump as well as me for that error in judgment and the dismantling of the deal,'" he wrote.

Federal authorities have charged Routh with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. He will appear in court on Monday for a bond hearing.
