Biden’s Secretary of State Antony Blinken sat down for an exclusive interview with Fox News. During the discussion, Blinken denied he played a role in the creation of the October 2020 letter signed by former national security officials that denounced the Hunter Biden laptop expose by the New York Post as being Russian disinformation. This dirty trick was prompted by the drafter of the letter, Mr. Michael Morell, who was contacted by Mr. Blinken. While Mr. Morell does not say that Blinken directly pressed him to write the letter, he did share an article with USA TODAY that was used to claim that the laptop was the product of a Russian disinformation campaign.
Mr. Blinken responded to this charge of him “triggering” the letter by saying, “One of the great benefits of this job is that I don’t do politics and don’t engage in it. But with regard to that letter, I didn’t – it wasn’t my idea, didn’t ask for it, didn’t solicit it. And I think the testimony that the former deputy director of the CIA, Mike Morrell, put forward confirms that.”
Blinken was also pressed on whether he now accepts that the Hunter Biden laptop story was not a Russian disinformation campaign. He pivoted from the topic by saying “Again, from my perspective, I’m not engaging in politics. I’ve got a lot on my agenda with the things that we’ve just talked about, trying to help the Ukrainians and the Russian aggression against them, engaging with allies and partners around the world, and dealing with some of the challenges posed by China. We have a situation now in Sudan that has fully occupied my time. So that’s where my focus is.”
Legal scholar Jonathan Turley commented on the larger picture concerning Mr. Blinken. He tweeted in a thread that “After an allegation that he pushed the debunked letter on Hunter Biden laptop, Antony Blinken is now being accused of perjury by a senator…Sen. Johnson is suggesting that Blinken ‘earned his bones’ by committing a federal crime…What is striking is that Johnson did not make this allegation on the floor where he would be protected by the Speech and Debate Clause. Blinken could sue for defamation. However. Johnson is pushing for an investigation into the possible perjury.”

In an article, Mr. Turley noted that “Blinken was implicated in a political coverup that could well have made the difference in the 2020 election. According to the sworn testimony of former acting CIA Director Michael Morrell, Blinken – then a high-ranking Biden campaign official – was ‘the impetus’ of the false claim that the Hunter Biden laptop story was really Russian disinformation.”
He continued by writing about the level of coordination between Mr. Morrell and the Biden campaign on the public release of the letter. He wrote that the letter was used by the media to censor discussion of the laptop scandal on social media and to uncritically dismiss the contents of the expose. Biden himself cited the letter that his own campaign staff were involved in to dismiss the story on the debate stage with Trump. This cover-up helped Biden win the 2020 election and Blinken, among other individuals who played similar roles in the past, was rewarded by Biden through the patronage of posts in the administration.
