On Friday, presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump responded to President Joe Biden's announcement during an interview with radio host Howard Stern that he would "be happy" to debate Trump ahead of the November elections.
"I am, somewhere. I don't know when. But I'm happy to debate him," Biden told Stern. Some political commentators hypothesized that Biden would skip the debate given that Trump had skipped the Republican primary debates earlier this year. Biden's announcement, however, seems to dispel that speculation. News organizations and the Trump campaign have repeatedly pressured the Biden campaign to agree to general election debates, with Trump even demanding that there be more debates than in 2020 or 2016.
In response to Biden's informal announcement, Trump said that he'd be willing to do the debate at the courthouse anytime next week and even tonight. "Crooked Joe Biden just announced that he’s willing to debate! Everyone knows he doesn’t really mean it, but in case he does, I say, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE, an old expression used by Fighters," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "I suggest Monday Evening, Tuesday Evening, or Wednesday Evening at my Rally in Michigan, a State that he is in the process of destroying with his E.V. Mandate."
"In the alternative, he’s in New York City today, although probably doesn’t know it, and so am I, stuck in one of the many Court cases that he instigated as ELECTION INTERFERENCE AGAINST A POLITICAL OPPONENT - A CONTINUING WITCH HUNT!" Trump continued. "It’s the only way he thinks he can win. In fact, let’s do the Debate at the Courthouse tonight - on National Television, I’ll wait around!"
The Trump campaign has been urging the Commission on Presidential Debates to schedule more debates this fall and to have them be moved up earlier to ensure that they occur before early voting begins. "While the Commission on Presidential Debates has already announced three presidential debates and a vice-presidential debate to occur later this year, we are in favor of these debates beginning much earlier," Trump campaign manager Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles wrote, adding that the commission "must move up the timetable of its proposed 2024 debates to ensure more Americans have a full chance to see the candidates before they start voting, and we would argue for adding more debates in addition to those on the currently proposed schedule."
Earlier this month, ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, Fox News, and The Associated Press, in a united effort, sent a letter to the Biden and Trump campaigns urging the two men to debate. "We, the undersigned national news organizations, urge the presumptive presidential nominees to publicly commit to participating in general election debates before November's election," the letter reads.
Biden and Trump went head-to-head in two debates before the 2020 election, with the third debate having to be canceled due to Trump's contraction of the coronavirus.
