Representative Alexandria Ocascio-Cortez (D-NY) has been caught red-handed potentially violating House ethics rules after she listed her fiancée, Riley Roberts, as her spouse on disclosure forms earlier this year.
According to The New York Post, AOC's office explained that Roberts and Cortez had never been "legally married" despite the fact that he was described as her spouse in the disclosure documents.
The couple, who got engaged in May 2022, apparently have spent long vacations in Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Italy according to the disclosure forms.
AOC flew to Asia in a trip sponsored by the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation and ventured to South America thanks to George Soros' Foundation, however, Roberts paid for his ticket and other expenses to accompany the Democrat representative.
“They are not legally married,” AOC spokeswoman Lauren Hitt told The Washington Free Beacon. “House Ethics has commonly recognized the term ‘spouse’ to extend to long-term partners.”
Given this admission, the New York Democrat certainly violated House ethics rules with the rules stating that a spouse must be someone to whom the representative is "legally married" thus forcing AOC to disclose Roberts' financial information.
Given the violation, AOC is potentially on the hook for a $50,000 fine or even five years in federal prison. However, neither of those outcomes are likely and she could be censured by the McCarthy-led House instead.
“If Rep. Ocasio-Cortez is going to refer to Mr. Roberts as her spouse in the context of one kind of ethics disclosure, it would be logical and consistent for her to do so in the context of all ethics disclosures, including annual financial disclosures and periodic transaction reports,” Project on Government Oversight manager Dylan Hedtler-Gaudette told the Free Beacon.
“If they were married, then she would be required to disclose his finances on her 2022 financial disclosure. There is no exception to this rule,” executive director of the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust Kendra Arnold explained.
As AOC continues to flaunt the rules enacted by the House of Representatives, one would hope that House Republicans would take notice and attempt to at least enact some kind of punishment against her.
