GOP Sets Sights On Biden’s Taxpayer-funded Program Promoting Worldwide Atheism Over Organized Religion

Republican members of Congress sent a letter last month to President Joe Biden and the State Department, expressing grave concern about the administration, “using appropriated funds to support atheism and radical, progressive orthodoxy across the world.”

The State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor launched a grant program in April titled, “DRL FY20 IRF Promoting and Defending Religious Freedom Inclusive of Atheist, Humanist, Non-Practicing and Non-Affiliated Individuals.”

The program gave out a half-million dollars ($500,000) in taxpayer funds to organizations spreading atheism and humanism in places like the Middle East, North Africa, and regions of Central/South Asia.

“It is one thing for the Department to be tolerant and respectful of a wide range of belief systems, and to encourage governments to respect the religious freedom interests of their citizens.” the Congressional letter stated. “It is quite another for the United States government to work actively to empower atheists, humanists, non-practicing, and non-affiliated in public decision-making.”

The GOP representatives argued such an action would be unconstitutional if it were taking place within the United States’ borders. They also questioned the usefulness of such a program in advancing America’s foreign policy interests.

“Were such programs known by the citizens of the target countries, we would expect that local populations, interest groups, and governments would bristle at what any ‘objective observer’ would see as ‘covert’ funding from a foreign power designed to shatter local religious and cultural relationships,” the statement continued.

The Congressional leaders further explained the State Department’s choice to promote atheism, would be analogous to it encouraging Christianity in China.

“This goal would never pass constitutional muster and would be derided by radical leftist bureaucrats in your agency as completely out-of-bounds,” the letter added.

The Congressmen then highlighted how the Biden administration has repeatedly promoted a leftist agenda abroad as “Black Lives Matter” flags have been flown outside embassies, while the State Department has created a “Special Representative for Racial Equity and Justice,” to push Critical Race Theory.

Once again, leftist bureaucrats have utilized taxpayer funds to push a pet project initiative that doesn’t benefit the United States diplomatically, or strategically, in any way. The administration has instead decided to push leftist moral values as a representation of the United States — further damaging the nation’s image abroad in the process.

Perhaps the White House should prioritize national security over virtue signaling before it seeks to promote a world without God.
