As Biden's press conference drew to a close, he was asked by a so far unidentified journalist for a reaction to the State Department release that indicated both the Trump and Biden White Houses were at fault. At this, Biden returned to the podium, seeming to be agitated.
He answered,
"Remember what I said? I said al-Qaeda wouldn't be there. I said we'd get help from the Taliban. What's happening now? What's going on? Read your press. I was right."
Biden then thumped the podium authoritatively as he turned to leave. However, as reported by Fox News, the State Department sees things differently. The report from Biden's own State Department read in part, "The decisions of both President Trump and President Biden to end the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan had serious consequences for the viability of the Afghan government and its security." The assessment was equally damning toward both presidents, "Those decisions are beyond the scope of this review, but the AAR team found that during both administrations there was insufficient senior-level consideration of worst-case scenarios and how quickly those might follow." The Department of State identified that there was no designated point of contact with the diplomatic department during the non-combatant evacuation operation conducted by the military. Under proper procedure the military plans such evacuations, but they are led by the State Department. This lack of communication was highlighted in the report, and this particular segment fell directly under the purview of the Biden administration in real-time. "U.S. military planning for a possible NEO had been underway with post for some time, but the Department’s participation in the NEO planning process was hindered by the fact that it was unclear who in the Department had the lead," the report read. According to The Washington Post, Tens of thousands of Afghans who had assisted the American and Allied war effort over the last two decades were left behind in the tragedy that followed. The botched evacuation saw a horrific suicide bombing that claimed the lives of some 170 Afghanistanis and 13 American personnel and a horribly mishandled drone strike that killed ten innocent civilians. In the face of reporting from VOA that Islamic State violence has led to the deaths of 1,000 civilians in Afghanistan since the fall of the Ghani government, Biden's insistence that the withdrawal received "help from the Taliban" and that "al-Qaeda wouldn't be there," rings particularly hollow. It is made even worse when coupled with the fact that the Islamic State-Khorasan, the group responsible for the 1,000 Afghanistanis killed and the Abbey Gate attack that killed 13 U.S. troops, was formed from a group of Pakistani Taliban fighters who broke away from the Afghan faction and swore allegiance to Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, according to findings of the UN Security Council. Evidently, the White House was either counting on the American people not doing their homework or the president just forgot what he was talking about. Both are likely.
