On the 22nd anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, President Joe Biden will be commemorating the attacks far from Ground Zero in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., or the field in Pennsylvania that saw the downing of United Flight 93. Instead, Biden will commemorate the 9/11 attacks in Alaska as Vice President Kamala Harris is sent instead to lower Manhattan.
As reported by The New York Post, President Biden, after spending the weekend in New Dehli, India for the G20 meeting and later in Hanoi, Vietnam, will be speaking to service members and first responders at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska.
Earlier in the day, Biden visited the late Senator John McCain's (R-AZ) memorial in Hanoi where the president could be seen kissing the marker honoring his former Senate colleague.
While Biden was busy kissing McCain's memorial, Kamala Harris flew to New York City to head to Ground Zero. She joined Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), New York City Mayor Eric Adams, and former Big Apple Mayor Michael Bloomberg for a ceremony at 9/11 Memorial and Museum.
White House staff also put out a memorial installation on the north side of the White House, however, no ceremony was held. Presidents Bush, Obama, and Trump all held ceremonies either at Ground Zero or at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue during their tenures, per The Post.
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, President Trump issued a solemn message to commemorate the 9/11 attacks.
"No one who lived through the horror of the September 11th terrorist attacks can ever forget the agony and anguish of that terrible day, it was a terrible day," Trump began. "The images of dark plumes of smoke billowing over lower Manhattan, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania, such a beautiful field, are seared into our minds forever."
"We will never forget," the New York City real estate mogul continued. "Today on this solemn anniversary of those monstrous attacks, we remember the 2,977 precious souls who were savagely taken from us on that morning 22 years ago leaving a void that can never be filled."
"No matter what happens it can never be filled," he reiterated. "We will say a prayer for each of the beautiful families they left behind whose pain is beyond comprehension."
"What they've gone through is not even believable," Trump, who was in New York on the day of the attack, explained. "We honor the firefighters, the great New York PD, the police department - what great people they are, they are so great. And the port authority officers, the Virginia, D.C., and Pentagon police, and the military service members and other first responders actually all over the country, they acted with supreme heroism and they went to the site of the most heinous crime."
"They would leave other states far away and go to the World Trade Center site, the Pentagon, they'd go to Pennsylvania and in many cases gave their lives in the line of duty," Trump added. "God bless the memory of all of those who perished in the 9/11 attacks."
"We will never, ever forget. We will never forget you. We love you. God bless their families and God bless America," President Trump concluded.
