Bill Banning 'Gender Affirming Care' Advances In Veto-Proof GOP Majority

This week, a Louisiana bill to prevent so-called “gender-affirming care” from being carried out upon children is set to move to the state House floor where it finds a Republican supermajority. Likewise, it will go to the Senate where it will find the same. Even with a likely veto from Governor John Bel Edwards (D-LA), the Louisiana GOP has the supermajority it needs to override the Democrat. It seems all but inevitable that this measure will become law.

According to Fox8 Live, the bill, introduced by Republican State Representative Gabe Firment, is designed to make prescribing or administering drugs or the performance of surgery on children for the treatment of gender dysphoria illegal.

Firment tweeted Elon Musk regarding the bill, HB463 suggesting the Twitter CEO supports the measure based on his statement, "Any parent or doctor who sterilizes a child before they are a consenting adult should go to prison for life."

The Lousiana Illuminator reported that in his opening statement Firment said, that HB463 was not rooted in hate but rather about the protection of children from what he identified as experimental treatments. He further added that he believes gender dysphoria should be treated as solely a matter of psychology, adding that he does not trust mental health providers who advocate for the so-called "gender-affirming treatments."

Fox8 Live revealed that Rep. Jason Hughes, a Democrat, proposed an amendment to the bill that would allow for the treatments in question as long as parental consent is acquired, this measure failed in an 11 to 6 vote.

In another attempted compromise, Hughes proposed an amendment "to prohibit gender-affirming surgeries for minors but still allow non-surgical treatments, including hormones and puberty blockers, after two years of mental health counseling," according to The Illuminator.

Firment opposed the moves saying that the "gender industry" has promoted the notion that children will die due to suicide unless they "pump vulnerable kids full of massive doses of powerful drugs.”

He told The Illuminator that claims that this bill would lead to more suicides “is a shameful social engineering strategy to keep societies focused preferentially on transgenderism.”

Due to recent party conversions in the Louisiana legislature, there is now a supermajority of the GOP in both the House and Senate, enabling the legislature to override any veto from Gov. Bel Edwards
