It is not only people who flow through America's open southern border but dangerous drugs. In a series of operations from March 6th to May 8th, federal border agents seized over a ton of fentanyl, over 2,000 pounds, which could have killed over 450 million persons, according to Just the News. A lethal dose of fentanyl can be as small as two milligrams of the substance.
The series of operations responsible for the catch were Operation Blue Lotus and Operation Four Horsemen. These operations covered only four points of entry and two checkpoints in Arizona. Also seized were large amounts of methamphetamine, Obviously, the southern border is far larger than just those points of entry and checkpoints.
The success of the operations was attributed by Scott Brown, a Department of Homeland Security Investigations Arizona Special Agent, as being due to "the federal, state and local partners that spent countless hours not just by responding to port calls but assisting HSI with seizures throughout Arizona...Drugs, but especially fentanyl, are decimating communities. But together and with education, we all can make a significant impact in curbing the senseless deaths associated with the sale of these deadly drugs."
Patricia McGurk-Daniel, Chief Patrol Agent of the Yuma Sector, similarly lauded Operation Four Horsemen's success. She said, "the success of the Four Horsemen operation was due to the collaborative efforts and teamwork of multiple agencies.” She said she was “especially proud of the Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents who worked tirelessly during this operation to take deadly drugs off our streets and out of the communities we proudly serve."

As a result of the drug bust, many of the alleged offenders are being prosecuted by local county attorneys. Nine cases, however, were referred for federal prosecution. The authorities noted that single vehicles were busted by the operations alone had enough fentanyl to kill tens of millions of lives. One driver and passenger caught smuggling the substance at a point of entry had 156 packages of the fatal drug that weighed 200 pounds. That amount of fentanyl is enough to kill more than 45.3 million persons.
In 2021 alone, over 100,000 persons died of a drug overdose in the United States. 66 percent of those deaths happened because of illicit fentanyl. Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. In many of these cases, the person did not know that they were injecting or taking fentanyl at all. In New York City alone, more than 80 percent of those who injected drugs tested positive for the substance despite only 18 percent claiming that they intentionally took the substance.
