On Thursday, another left-wing candidate entered the 2024 presidential race to unseat President Joe Biden from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Green Party candidate Jill Stein, who was instrumental in taking votes away from Hillary Clinton in 2016 in the swing states, announced that she would be running for the presidency after Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Cornel West both announced independent bids earlier this year.
"The political system is broken. Over 60% of us now say the two-party establishment has failed us and we need a party that serves the people," Stein wrote on X/Twitter. "I'm running for President to offer a better choice for the people."
"Let's put a pro-worker, anti-war, climate emergency agenda front and center in this election and on the ballot across the country," she said. "People are tired of being thrown under the bus by wealthy elites & their bought politicians, tired of living paycheck to paycheck, struggling to pay the rent, locked into student debt & medical debt, with child poverty doubling, rising diseases of despair, & growing hopelessness."
"The ruling parties that got us into this mess aren't getting us out. Both parties are squandering trillions on the endless war machine, fueling conflict around the world while tens of millions here at home lack food, housing, and healthcare," the presidential candidate continued. "The two parties of war and Wall Street are bought and paid for. The Democrats have betrayed their promises for working people, youth and the climate again and again - while Republicans don't even make such promises in the first place."
Stein's candidacy represents yet another left-wing candidate attempting to court the progressive vote in 2024. Throughout her campaign ad, the Green Party candidate highlighted the recent calls for a ceasefire in Gaza called for by many on the progressive left, a policy that Joe Biden has opposed.
Stein's entry into the race will be yet another headache for the Democrat Party as they attempt to get Biden over the finish line next year despite his tremendous unpopularity and age. Stein will join other candidates such as Cornel West, who will attempt to win over voters from Biden's left, while candidates like RFK Jr. win over voters from the more moderate side of the Democrat Party and potentially some Republicans.
Poll after poll has shown that third-party candidates hurt Biden's reelection chances, and the announcement that the Green Party will be attempting to get on the ballot in swing states across America could lead to a repeat of 2016.
