On Thursday, Democrat activists from the Sunrise Movement, an organization of young people pushing for the Green New Deal and radical climate policies, occupied the office of Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).
"RIGHT NOW: we’re in [Speaker McCarthy]’s office, demanding him to avert a government shutdown and fund climate action we desperately need," the group wrote on X/Twitter.
The group, made up of dozens of young activists, were holding up yellow signs that read 'The GOP Hates Gen Z,' 'McCarthy Aren't You Ashamed,' and 'Green New Deal Now.'
"Young people are here because Kevin McCarthy and other Republicans are playing political games with our lives," the group claimed. "We’re over this bullshit. We demand climate action NOW."
The organization has been lobbying Congress in recent days in order to push for radical climate policies and the occupation of McCarthy's office has had many draw comparisons to the harsh sentencing given out to those present on January 6th.
The popular X/Twitter account End Wokeness wrote, "Richard Barnett was sentenced to 4.5 years for entering Speaker Pelosi’s office on J/6. Today, climate activists stormed Speaker McCarthy’s office at the Capitol. Will they get the same treatment?"
"Insurrectionists and you are literally destroying our Republic. I hope y'all are jailed without bond," wrote another user.
"Much simpler to just advocate for nuclear," another user commented, adding, "And it doesn’t look so 'insurrection-y.'"
Ultimately, Capitol Police did arrest 19 members of the organization for their disorderly occupation of the speaker's office. "18 young people have been arrested outside of Kevin McCarthy’s office for peacefully protesting a government shutdown and demanding climate action," the group wrote.
