On Wednesday, Rep. Donald Payne Jr. (D-PA) passed away at the age of 65 after suffering from a "cardiac episode." Payne has represented New Jersey's 10th Congressional District, comprised of parts of Essex, Union, and Hudson counties, since 2013.
The congressman was rushed to the hospital on April 6 after suffering a heart attack due to complications from diabetes. Since then, he has been unconscious and on a ventilator at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. "Tammy and I are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of our friend, and a steadfast champion for the people of New Jersey, Congressman Donald Payne, Jr.," Gov. Phil Murphy (D-NJ) wrote. "Our heartfelt prayers are with his family during this difficult time."
This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly.
