On Friday, 45th President Donald Trump weighed in on the Montana GOP primary on the very day that Montana Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT) joined the race for the Senate seat. Instead of endorsing Rosendale, however, Trump decided to support Tim Sheehy's run to take out Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT).
"I LOVE MONTANA! Tim Sheehy is an American Hero and highly successful Businessman from the Great State of Montana," Trump wrote. "He is strongly supported by our incredible Chairman of the NRSC, Steve Daines, and many other patriotic Senators and Republicans who have endorsed our Campaign to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
"I also respect Matt Rosendale, and was very happy to Endorse him in the past - and will Endorse him again in the future should he decide to change course and run for his Congressional Seat," the leader of the Republican party explained. "But in this instance, Tim is the candidate who is currently best-positioned to DEFEAT Lazy Jon Tester, and Regain the Republican Majority in the United States Senate. Tim is a Political Outsider, Strong on the Border, the Military/Vets, and our constantly under siege Second Amendment. He will stand tall in the fight against the Radical Left Democrats, who are Destroying our Country. Also, he is far more likely to Defeat Lazy Jon. America First Patriot Tim Sheehy has my Complete and Total Endorsement!"
In response to the message, Sheehy, who is also endorsed by Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD), Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT), and others, thanked President Trump. "The people of Montana stand with you and I proudly stand with you!" Sheehy wrote. "Thank you, Mr. President. Let's MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
Rosendale, who is backed by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), and Gun Owners of America, remained defiant and wrote that he would remain in the race despite Trump's call to return to his House seat. "I love President Trump. But he needs actual fighters in the U.S. Senate to enact his Agenda 47 - and that's me and not Mitch McConnell's hand pick, Tim Sheehy," he said. "I'm going to win this primary, defeat Jon Tester in November and together we will Make America Great Again!"
It is noteworthy that Rosendale, a firebrand House member that assisted in the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), lost the Senate race in 2018 against Tester. Rosendale was only able to secure the support of 46.78 percent of voters in The Treasure State compared to Tester's 50.33 percent. President Trump carried the state in 2020 by 16 points with 56.92 percent of the vote compared to Biden's 40.55 percent support.
The Montana Republican primary will certainly be a messy contest to determine who will take on Sen. Tester in November. Irrespective of who becomes the Republican nominee, the GOP must take back the Senate seat currently held by a Democrat that votes with the Biden agenda 90 percent of the time in deep-red Montana.
