Following the first presidential debate between President Joe Biden and President Donald Trump, the Biden campaign, undeterred by the 81-year-old Democrat's performance, reaffirmed their participation in the second debate hosted by ABC News on September 10.
Despite the debate's outcome, the Biden campaign remains steadfast. 'Not only does POTUS not plan to drop out, he remains committed to a second debate in September,' an advisor assured CNN White House correspondent Kayla Tausche. A White House spokesperson echoed this sentiment, stating that the president has no intention of withdrawing from the race. 'Of course, he's not dropping out,' Biden campaign spokesperson Seth Schuster affirmed to The Hill.
Within minutes of the debate opening, a glassy-eyed, slack-jawed Joe Biden could be seen slurring his words and speaking incoherently on multiple occasions as he attempted to get his point across with his political opponent just feet away. Making matters worse for the Democrat's re-election hopes, Biden's voice was raspy and weak, which the White House attributed to a cold.
In an interview with CNN following the debate, Vice President Kamala Harris attempted to lessen the impact of her running mate's lackluster showing, telling Anderson Cooper, "Listen, people can debate on style points, but ultimately, this election and who is the president of the United States has to be about substance...It was a slow start. That is obvious to everyone. I'm not going to debate that point."
Despite Democrat damage control, a flash poll conducted by CNN after the debate found that only 33 percent of those surveyed who watched the debate felt that Biden won, while a whopping 67 percent believed that Trump won. Biden's backers in the media came to the same conclusion, with a survey of New York Times columnists finding that not a single writer believed that Biden even came close to winning, with a majority believing that Trump decisively won.
President Biden's performance on Thursday evening showed millions of Americans just how far his mental capabilities have deteriorated in the past four years. The 81-year-old, who would be 86 by the end of his second term, has proven himself unable to debate his political rival, and Democrats are beginning to realize that having Biden at the top of the ticket could lead to a landslide defeat in November. Nevertheless, the White House will continue to try to save Biden's candidacy and commit to the second debate.
