On Saturday, it was announced that former President of the United States Jimmy Carter has opted to begin hospice care rather than seek further medical intervention as the 98-year-old suffers from ailing health.
“After a series of short hospital stays, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medication intervention,” the Carter Center released in a statement.
“He has the full support of his family and his medical team,” the statement read. “The Carter family asks for privacy during this time and is grateful for the concern shown by his many admirers.”
President Jimmy Carter serves as president from 1977 to 1981. His presidency was marked by economic stagflation, worsening tensions with the Soviet Union, and an important emphasis on human rights.
Since he left office, Carter has gained fame through his various health and peace programs via the Carter Center.

The Center “is guided by the principles of our Founders, Jimmy, and Rosalynn Carter. Founded, in partnership with Emory University, on a fundamental commitment to human rights and the alleviation of human suffering, the Center seeks to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health.”
“The Center believes that people can improve their own lives when provided with the necessary skills, knowledge, and access to resources. The Center emphasizes action and measurable results in the lives of the people it seeks to help,” the Carter Center’s page reads. “The Center values the courage to break new ground, fill vacuums, and address the most difficult problems in the most difficult situations. The Center recognizes that solving difficult problems requires careful analysis, relentless persistence, and the recognition that failure is an acceptable risk. The Center is nonpartisan and it seeks to work collaboratively with other organizations from the highest levels of government to local communities.”
President Carter also gained the favor of all Americans by continually giving back to local communities via his work with Habitat for Humanity.
“In 2019, President Jimmy Carter, the oldest living former president in US history, at age 95, built Habitat for Humanity homes in Nashville,” wrote columnist Vala Afshar. “President Carter represents the best of humanity.”
