On Wednesday evening, eight Republican presidential candidates took to the stage in Milwaukee for the first GOP presidential debate hosted by Fox News and the Republican National Committee.
The sixth round of questions turned to China and its possible invasion of Taiwan in the coming years and the southern border.
Doug Burgum was first given the opportunity to answer where he emphasized arming Taiwan. He also took the opportunity to focus on strengthening border control.
Sen. Tim Scott also turned to the southern border and emphasized that a Republican president needs to finish the wall and stop the flow of fentanyl.
Bret Baier then showed images released earlier this month of armed men crossing the Texas border to ask Asa Hutchinson whether he would use lethal force to secure the border. Hutchinson said that America needs to use economic pressure to force Mexico to do their part to combat the cartels. He also said that the military needs to be limited in its use.
Gov. DeSantis then was asked whether he would support using special forces to enter Mexico to combat the cartels. DeSantis said that he would do it "on day one" and that America needs to reestablish the rule of law along the border to defend Americans. DeSantis then doubled down that he would define the cartels as domestic terrorist organizations.
The Fox moderators then asked Pence about his record under the Trump administration and the lack of completion of the border wall. Pence turned to his record of negotiating the border wall and the Remain in Mexico policy by forcing Mexico to the table via economic pressure.
Gov. Chris Christie was then asked about the seven million illegal migrants who have entered the country under the Biden administration. Christie said that America needs to first stop the flow of migrants and then enforce the law for those who entered illegally. He said that illegal migrants need to be detained and not rewarded for breaking the law.
During the debate, leading 2024 Republican candidate and 45th President Donald Trump joined former Fox News host Tucker Carlson instead of joining the debate stage.
