On Wednesday evening, eight Republican presidential candidates took to the stage in Milwaukee for the first GOP presidential debate hosted by Fox News and the Republican National Committee.
The debate began with a focus on Bidenomics with a question prompted by the new hit song 'Rich Men North of Richmond' to whcih Gov. DeSantis blasted President Biden for his failing economic policies. DeSantis also took a shot a Hunter Biden and Congress that has allowed for trillions of dollars in spending in recent years. "I will get the job done and I will not let you down," DeSantis said.
Former Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) was then asked the same question. He agreed with DeSantis but explained that the only way to reverse Biden's policies is to win the Congress in 2024 to which he argued that he has the experience of doing so having led a Democrat dominated state during his governorship. "We cannot sit behind anylonger and allow the kind of spending that is going on in Washington," he said.
Bret Baier then attempted to hit Christie on his economic record during his governorship with the state's credit rating being regularly downgraded. Christie blamed the downgrade on prior Democrat leadership.
Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) was then asked about what he has done in the Senate to reign in federal spending over his past ten years in Congress. Scott took the time to attack President Biden for his policies that have led to record energy prices and inflation. Scott said that he aided in writing the 2017 tax cuts as evidence of his record. The moderator attempted to hit Scott on his support of the various bills that led to record spending in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. Scott pivoted and once again went after Biden.
Baier then turned to Vivek Ramaswamy where he took the opportunity to introduce himself to the nation with an emphasis on putting forth a vision to acheive the American Dream. He also focused on his youth as the youngest candidate in the race.
The debate then turned to former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley where she focused on fixing congressional spending, earmarks, and put a continual emphasis on reigning in spending. Haley took the time to bash Pence, DeSantis, and Scott as well as President Trump for increasing spending in recent years.
Former Vice President Mike Pence was then asked about his role in spending during the Trump administration. He pivoted and explained that he is proud of the record he was able to acheive with Trump and emphasized that he is one of the most accomplished Republicans on the stage.
Pence attempted to attack Vivek to which Ramswamy responded with an emphasis on energy independence and deregulating the economy.
"Now is not the time for on the job training," Pence said about Vivek.
DeSantis was then responded and took the opportunity to slam the federal government for the various pandemic policies pushed by bureacrats like Antony Fauci.
Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND) took the opportunity to go after Biden with a focus on how the United States has been buying oil and gas from China while American energy is handicapped by Washington.
Former Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R-AR) finally took the opportunity to introduce himself to voters explaining that he was a pro-life governor who ran a conservative state. He emphasized his record and explained that he would the best candidate to bring change to Washington and lead "with positive solutions."
During the debate, leading 2024 Republican candidate and 45th President Donald Trump joined former Fox News host Tucker Carlson instead of joining the debate stage.
