BREAKING: Gov. Tim Walz Agrees To Vice Presidential Debate With CBS News

On Wednesday, Democratic vice presidential candidate Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) agreed to an October 1 debate with CBS News to face off with Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), who has repeatedly criticized the governor in recent days for lying about his military service record. The debate, which has yet to be agreed to by the Trump-Vance campaign, would come after the presidential debate on September 10 between President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

In a post on X, CBS News offered four dates to the two campaigns for an upcoming vice presidential debate in New York City. "Today, CBS News invited both vice-presidential candidates to participate in a debate in New York City," the news network explained. "We provided the campaigns with four dates as options: Sept. 17, Sept. 24, Oct. 1, and Oct. 8. We look forward to their responses and providing voters with an opportunity to hear directly from the vice-presidential candidates."

While the Trump-Vance campaign has yet to respond to CBS's debate request, Gov. Walz wrote on X, "See you on October 1, JD." A campaign spokesman later told CBS that the Minnesota governor "looks forward to debating JD Vance—if he shows up."

The Trump campaign previously refused to commit to a vice presidential debate after selecting Vance on July 15, explaining that Harris, at the time, could end up at the top of the Democratic ticket. "We don't know who the Democrat nominee for Vice President is going to be, so we can't lock in a date before their convention. To do so would be unfair to Gavin Newsom, JB Pritzker, Gretchen Whitmer, or whoever Kamala Harris picks as her running mate," the campaign said.

The vice presidential debate will be a defining moment for both candidates as voters get to learn about each man's policy positions. This is particularly true given that Gov. Walz has yet to take any questions from the media after being chosen to be Harris's running mate last week. Trump seems confident that Vance will hold his own against Walz, explaining that Vance, who has done multiple sit-down interviews and crisscrossed the country, has "really stepped up" and is "doing a fantastic job."
