On Tuesday, the House Democratic leadership, under the guidance of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jefferies (D-NY), made a significant announcement. They declared their non-support for Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's (R-GA) motion to vacate Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA). This decision, to vote to table the motion if the Georgia Republican brought it to the floor, is a notable development. It follows Johnson's collaboration with Democrats to ensure the passage of a $95 billion foreign aid package through the lower chamber.
"For months, House Republicans irresponsibly delayed critical security assistance to our democratic allies in Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific, while simultaneously blocking humanitarian assistance to civilians in harm's way in places like Gaza, Haiti, and the Sudan," the Democratic leadership said in a statement. "From the very beginning of this Congress, House Democrats have put people over politics and found bipartisan common ground with traditional Republicans in order to deliver real results...At this moment, upon completion of our national security work, the time has come to turn the page on this chapter of Pro-Putin Republican obstruction. We will vote to table Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's Motion to Vacate the Chair. If she invokes the motion, it will not succeed."
Greene's motion, which garnered support from Reps. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) and Thomas Massie (R-KY), was introduced earlier this month. This was after Speaker Johnson indicated his intention to bring the foreign aid package to the floor and after the House reauthorized the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) without a warrant requirement. In light of these developments, Greene pledged to bring the motion to vacate, stating on Fox News last week, "Mike Johnson's Speakership is over. He needs to do the right thing to resign and allow us to move forward in a controlled process, and if he doesn't do so, he will be vacated."
"It's coming regardless of what Mike Johnson decides to do. And we have three more Republicans joining us for a special election coming up very soon. So, people need to know this can happen," Greene said. Despite her claims, a number of House Republicans are casting doubt on whether she would follow through, and the announcement from House Democratic leadership makes it increasingly unlikely.
According to Axios, Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) believes that the motion to vacate is dead in the water. "I don't personally think so based on what I'm hearing, but you'd have to talk to the folks that have talked about triggering it," he told the outlet. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) also said that he hopes that the motion will not be brought up by Greene in the week ahead.
"I'm not convinced that if we go into a motion to vacate, we come out with a more conservative solution, so I think every person has to evaluate it," Rep. Josh Brecheen (R-OK) said about a potential ouster of Johnson.
