BREAKING: House GOP Selects Fourth House Speaker Nominee

On Tuesday evening, the House Republican conference once again chose a House speaker candidate as they continue to struggle to find a lawmaker to lead the conference after three candidates, Reps. Steve Scalise (R-LA), Jim Jordan (R-OH), and Tom Emmer (R-MN), all withdrew as the nominee.

The GOP, in a closed-door meeting, voted to nominate Rep. MIke Johnson (R-LA) to be the next speaker nominee. Johnson won the nomination on the third ballot with 128 votes. From those who didn't vote for him, 43 voted for Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), one voted for Jim Jordan, 29 voted for Rep. Byron Donalds, and three voted present.

Johnson nomination to the position comes just a few hours after Republican Whip Tom Emmer was stepped down from running for the nomination after at least 26 holdouts refused to back his candidacy. Johnson could suffer the same fate but many are hoping that the lawmaker, who is well liked amongst the conference, could overcome the hurdles that other candidates couldn't.

Now that the GOP has settled on a new nominee, they will take a roll call vote to see how many lawmakers will vote for him on the House floor and, if the number of holdouts are low enough, Johnson may attempt a vote on the House floor later this week.

Johnson, who was elected in 2016, was the former head of the Republican Study Committee and has been active in House leadership in recent years.

This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly.
