On Tuesday, House Republicans once again chose a new nominee for speaker of the House after multiple ballots in a closed-door meeting.
After five ballots, Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) successfully won the majority of his conference's vote after nine separate candidates ran for the position, including big names like Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) and Rep. Kevin Hern (R-OK).
Emmer, who is the Republican whip, notably won less support than Jim Jordan did last week, showcasing that he will have a tough uphill battle ahead of him to win the speaker's gavel.
The Minnesota Republican became a favorite in the race after Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) was repeated after three votes on the House floor last week. Given the amount of holdouts against him, Emmer will have to begin immediate negotiations with the holdouts if he has any chance of becoming speaker.
Emmer has yet to reveal when he will take his candidacy to the House floor, but his allies have revealed that he wants to avoid a public display of chaos that ultimately sunk Jordan's chances.
“I think it would behoove whoever wins this to stay in the room and figure out where they are at and whether they can get there,” Rep. Kelly Armstrong (R-ND) said, per POLITICO. “I don’t think anybody is really interested in another three or four vote series” on the floor.”
This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly.
