On Saturday, Iran launched hundreds of killer drones towards the state of Israel in a retaliatory attack following the assassination of Iranian military personnel by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in Damascus earlier this month. The drone attack is a major retaliation and could lead to a wider war in the Middle East.
The attack, which began in the late evening hours local time, includes hundreds of slow-moving drones that have yet to reach Israeli territory. The Israeli Defense Forces have been placed on high alert, and the majority of the drones are likely to be intercepted en route to Israeli territory. Iran, which has routinely attacked Israel through proxies like Hezbollah and Hamas, has never attacked Israel from its own territory, making Saturday's attack a historic first for the totalitarian regime. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly convened his war cabinet in Tel Aviv in response to the attack.
IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari said in brief remarks, "Iran has launched a direct attack from Iranian soil towards the state of Israel. We are closely monitoring Iranian killer drones that are en route to Israel sent by Iran. This is a severe and dangerous escalation. Our defensive and offensive capabilities are at the highest level of readiness ahead of this large-scale attack from Iran. Together with our partners, the Israeli Defense Forces is operating at full force to defend the state of Israel and the people of Israel. This is a mission that we are determined and ready to fulfill."
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps released a statement amid the attack explaining the justification for the attack. “In response to the numerous crimes of the evil Zionist regime, including the attack on the consular section of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Damascus and the martyrdom of Iranian military commanders and advisors, in the early hours of the Sunday morning, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Aerospace Force together with other IRGC forces, as part of the punishment of that illegitimate and criminal regime, successfully hit targets inside the occupied territories with dozens of missiles and drones.”
The White House National Security Council Spokesperson Adreinne Watson explained that President Biden has been briefed on the situation and that he stands with Israel. "Iran has begun an airborne attack against Israel. President Biden is being regularly updated on the situation by his national security team and will meet with them this afternoon at the White House," the NSC spokesperson said. "His team is in constant communication with Israeli officials as well as other partners and allies. This attack is likely to unfold over a number of hours. President Biden has been clear: our support for Israel’s security is ironclad. The United States will stand with the people of Israel and support their defense against these threats from Iran"
