After President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris decided to debate one another on September 10, the Republican presidential candidate challenged Harris to two other debates to force Harris to answer questions and explain her policy positions to the American people on multiple occasions. Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) seems to be taking the same strategy, agreeing on Thursday to a debate on October 1 with Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) and challenging him to another debate on September 18 with CNN.
"The American people deserve as many debates as possible, which is why President Trump has challenged Kamala to three of them already," Vance wrote in response to Walz's acceptance of the October 1 CBS News debate. "Not only do I accept the CBS debate on October 1st, I also accept the CNN debate on September 18th. I look forward to seeing you at both!"
In a post on X on Wednesday, CBS News revealed that it offered four dates to the two campaigns for an upcoming vice presidential debate in New York City. "Today, CBS News invited both vice-presidential candidates to participate in a debate in New York City," the news network explained. "We provided the campaigns with four dates as options: Sept. 17, Sept. 24, Oct. 1, and Oct. 8. We look forward to their responses and providing voters with an opportunity to hear directly from the vice-presidential candidates."
In response to the offer, Gov. Walz wrote on X, "See you on October 1, JD." A campaign spokesman later told CBS that the Minnesota governor "looks forward to debating JD Vance—if he shows up."
While Gov. Walz has yet to respond to the second debate challenge, Vance's plan aligns with his running mate, who challenged Harris to two other debates on September 4 with Fox News and September 25 with NBC News. Despite the three debate challenges, Harris has only agreed to one of the debates, prompting the Trump-Vance campaign to argue that the vice president is scared to debate Trump and would rather hide behind a teleprompter than take questions from the press.
